  On February 26th, 2011 the Association held their 105th Anniversary and Awards Banquet. The following awards were presented at that time.

THE ROY DUNDERDALE MEMORIAL HUMANITARIAN AWARD

The “Roy Dunderdale Humanitarian Award” is presented to a non Firefighter, who performs an act of lifesaving.  

The 2010 recipient is 15 year old, Darlene Dougherty of Folcroft, as student at the Delaware County Technical High School.

Earlier this year Darlene attended a class in CPR/AED training at the Emergency Services Training Center. On Saturday December 4th, 2010, Darlene was in her Delmar Village home when she looked out the kitchen window and saw her father on the ground next to his truck. Darlene ran outside and called 911. She summoned help and instructed a neighbor to hold her Dad’s head when she saw he had hit it either on the truck or driveway to prevent any further head or spinal injury. She then proceeded to perform CPR. Paramedics and an Ambulance arrived shortly, took over CPR duties and proceeded to use an AED to bring her father “back”.

Darlene is being recognized for her swift, efficient, and competent response to a life and crisis.

Pio Zapasodi Congressional Award

This award is name after the late Pio Zapasodi, a long time member of the Delaware County Firemen's Association who represented the 8th District on the Executive Board. This award is presented yearly by former Congressman Weldon, to a person who has helped the Fire Service in Delaware County

The 2010 recipient is

John Waters – Chief Fire Marshal & Director of Safety and Code Enforcement for Upper Merion Township

John is a Life Member of the Bon Air Fire Company, an Honorary Life Member of the Clifton Heights Fire Company, and Co Chair of the PA Fire sprinkler Coalition. This year’s award goes to an individual who has made significant difference in the safety of not only the public, but also firefighters and other Emergency Responders. John is a Certified Fire Protection Specialist and a member of ICC, the IAFC, and NFPA. He has used his unique skills, combined with his years of experience with his local fire departments and his career profession as Chief Fire Marshal and Director of Safety and Code Enforcement, to educate the public, journalists, members of the General Assembly and others about the need for cost effectiveness of Sprinklers as a life saving system. He serves as Co-Chairman of the Pa Fire Sprinkler Coalition and through his outstanding efforts and dedication has led the fight to keep sprinklers in the Pa Uniform Construction Code. He has testified at many public meetings, hearings, Legislative hearings, and provided personal guidance and education regarding sprinklers to many across Pennsylvania.

Business of the Year Award

The Business of the Year Award is presented annually to a business or corporation, in Delaware County that has contributed to the benefit, welfare or improvement of the Fire Service in an outstanding manner.

 

The 2010 recipient is Kemph Supply 

Over the years sales representative Brian Hassel, of Kemph Supply has been most helpful with various projects at the Emergency Services Training Center. He has worked with his suppliers to get the best pricing for materials needed for several projects. During the past year Kemph Supply provided assistance during the Underwriter Laboratories (UL) testing of full scale test burns of lightweight floor material. The project required the construction of (2) 24’x40’x8’ concrete structures to simulate a residential basement. The testing involved constructing a lightweight floor assembly on the foundation and conducting live burns on the materials. During the design phase Kemph Supply provided manufacturers literature, pricing, and design assistance. They were also able to adjust to changes in materials required for the project and worked to keep material deliveries on schedule.

Andrew Hogan Memorial Fire Safety Education Award

The Andrew Hogan Memorial Fire Safety Education Award has been established to recognize an organization or an individual, who has developed or contributed to a new or extraordinary program to teach Fire Safety Education to the general public in the County of Delaware.

 

The 2010 recipient is William Rankin of the Newtown Square Fire Company # 1

William Rankin has been responsible for conduction fire prevention programs for the Newtown Square Fire Company for a number of years. Over those years the fire prevention program has expanded to over 4 weeks a year providing fire safety instruction to grade schools, a private nursery, and other childcare institutions. Additionally a program was developed for Marple Newtown High School and an outreach program for adults was conducted.

Christopher N. Kangas Memorial Junior Firefighter Award

The Christopher N. Kangas Memorial Junior Firefighter of The Year Award is to recognize an outstanding junior firefighter who is a member of a Fire Company or a Department in Delaware County.

The 2010 recipients are Zachary Conan of the Newtown Square Fire Company and Ryan Graf of the Goodwill Fire Company.

Zachary Conan is a young man who recognizes that training is the key for successful firefighting. He continuously takes part in training sessions. His quest for “learning and doing” have become contagious with other Junior Firefighters. The position of “Junior Sergeant” was created for him by the Officers of Newtown Square Fire Company. In this position he serves as liaison between the Chief and other Junior Firefighters.

Zachary attends Marple Newtown High School and has a landscaping business which demonstrates his focus and self-motivation.

 

Ryan Graf has attended numerous training sessions at the fire house and the Emergency Services Training Center. Ryan attending CPU/First Aid training and had an opportunity to put it to use. On November 27th, 2010, while on his way to a birthday party with his mother. Ryan observed a 70 year old man who had fallen in the middle of the street and was conscious, but bleeding from the back of his head. Ryan rendered first aid to the patient and gave him comfort while waiting for EMS to arrive. Upon arrival of Paramedics, Ryan gave a clear report of the incident.

Both Zachary and Ryan are considered an asset to their fire companies and communities.

Harry Maitland Lifetime Achievement Award

The Harry Maitland Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to a member of the Delaware County Firemen's Association who has shown life long devotion, support, and commitment to the Fire Service of Delaware County in an outstanding manner. Any member in good standing of the Association is eligible to be nominated by any individual member or organization member in good standing for this award.

The 2010 recipient is Frederick H. Field of the Concordville Fire & Protective Association.

 

Fred began his journey with the fire company in February 1954. Even now, 56 years later Fred still remains active in alarm response to this day. Fred became a Life Member after serving twenty five (25) years. During his years of service Fred has held the positions of Fire Chief (13) years, Assistant Chief, Chief Engineer, Director, and Chairman of the Board of the Concordville Fire & Protective Association. Fred has served at the 11th District Fire Marshal and is currently is the Concord Township Fire Marshal where he has served for more than 30 years. On the County level Fred has served as Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator and served on the Delaware County Radio Committee for more than 30 years. Fred is a Life Member of the Delaware County Firemen’s Association and considered a leader, mentor, and champion of the Fire Service in Delaware County.

ROBERT R. BAXTER JR. “FIREFIGHTER OF THE YEAR” AWARD

The Robert R. Baxter Jr. “Firefighter of the Year” Award is presented to a member of the Delaware County Firemen’s Association for Outstanding or Meritorious effort on behalf of the Fire Service.

The 2010 recipient is IRA (Kerby) Kerber of the Broomall Fire Company.

Kerby is employed by the Delaware county Emergency Services Training Center which provides fire training to firefighters, EMS and police.

During the past year Kerby provided a leadership role in bringing two (2) major projects to Delaware County firefighters and the Emergency Services Training Center. The first project involved teaming with Underwriters Laboratory (UL) of Chicago, Illinois and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) of Washington D.C. to conduct live fire testing of exposed floor rafters developing detailed data on collapse time of various building materials. The second project involved coordination with the Pennsylvania State Fire commissioner and the State Fire School in Lewistown to conduct Live Fire Training Certification for State Fire Service Instructors at the Delaware County Emergency Services Training Center. As a result of his efforts sixteen (16) State Fire Instructors from across the state, including four (4) from Delaware County were recertified to conduct Live Fire Training Exercises. As a results of this project the firefighters of Delaware County will benefit from the hands-on skills instruction acquired from these State Certified Instructions.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD

Tonight the Delaware County Firemen’s Association Board of Fire Marshals is pleased to recognize DCFA President Robert Blithe of Newtown Square Fire Company for his dedication and work on behalf of the Association. Bob has been serving as “Webmaster” for the Association, updating the website and providing e-mail communications to the fire service personnel throughout the County. Under Bob’s guidance the website received a new look. Bob has also been working with other Officers of the DCFA to acquire hardware and software that will enable the Association to provide more efficient record keeping of the Association affairs.
